Why this model of support?

This is a very good question, as I understand that living off full time support can seem unusual to many. I believe that all Christians are called to be missional in their life - that is - bringing little bits of heaven to earth in the way God enables them to.

There are many different ways to do this, be that full time work, full time parenting, social enterprises, volunteering and more. Each has their unique strengths and weaknesses, let me share with you why full time support is necessary for the ministry I’m involved in.

People over profit

  • The biggest strength of my work with Look Up is that by having almost zero overheads, the need for sales doesn’t drive my decisions, instead being guided by obedience to the Holy Spirit

  • I can be people-centered in everything I do, be that the lonely person who walks in looking for someone to talk to, or the new artist with a powerful message that is unable to afford an exhibition space

Not your average 9 to 5

  • Being a missionary is a lifestyle, it is both full time (Monday-Friday, 9-5) AND more

  • At YWAM Amsterdam, we live in community, so my week also includes rhythms such as base meetings, community work (for me comms and maintenance) and work duties to take care of the buildings we live in and each other

  • On top of work hours, I’m always involved in running evening events, prayer meetings, discipleship, serving a local church and more

  • Very practically, there isn’t time to also work on the side without either compromising the ministry or burning out

Sustainability

  • In my first year in the Netherlands, I dedicated $20K (my then house deposit savings ! ) including my DTS, to serving as a missionary. Obviously, it isn’t sustainable to live off your savings

  • God is calling me to go now, not when I have income from an investment property or an inheritance

  • I need the support of people who believe in me and what God is doing in Amsterdam, without you, it’s impossible

Subscribe to my updates

I send out semi-regular emails to keep friends and family in the loop with what’s happening and active ways they can be praying for me and my work. It’s also a nice avenue for some personal two-way communication. Add yourself below :)
